ABOUT

Katie Loomis is a painter living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. Loomis received her MFA and BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2012 and 2007. Loomis’ work has been exhibited in group and solo shows, is in private and public collections.

Reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism and Geometric Abstraction, my work is characterized by the individuality, yet formal reproduction of mark-making. The individuality of marks is evident through my organic, spontaneous and gestural approach of pouring, pushing, and pulling the paint across the canvas. Conversely, control is evident through the more precise and hard edge application of paint, where I layer geometry over gesture. This conflation of control and gesture is born out of my interest in the imperfections with the use of the hand, where control is lost and then regained. I find beauty in the physical act of painting, where imperfections are buried and revealed with each new layer of paint informed by the last.
